fuel milage

in

Hey I love my cube. I bought it in October and for the first few weeks got great fuel milage. Then it slowly started to go down hill. It has now gone from bad to real bad, im getting 10km a litre! Anybody else haveing fuel milage problems? Still love my cube, just not loveing fuel bill.

How fast do you accelerate and drive?

The best I have seen, in a 1,000 km trip, putting the cruise control at 100, with several stops for gas/food/toilet, I got 6.8 L/100km.
The worst I have had (my current commute), idling for 3 to 5 minutes in the morning to warm the engine and clear the windshield, then driving for 10 minutes in slow traffic with lots of stop lights, getting about 9.5 L/100km.
When I drove across the city every day (about 40km per day, no idling before morning drive), I would get about 7.8 to 8.5 L/100 km.
I tend to drive at the speed limit to 10% above the limit, with cruise control set, and accelerate at a reasonable to slow rate. (This seems to upset lots of people in my neighbourhood, where the speed limit is 40)

Are you accounting for idling time? Remember that you are getting "0" miles to the gallon or an infinite number of litres per 100km when at a standstill. The computer averages this as well. Winter usually equates to lousy fuel economy.

Yes we have accounted for idling time. Even on highway driving the milage is not good. We drove only 412 km on the highway and had to refill. Maybe my expectations are unrealistic.

I expect it would get it's best mileage in the 70~90 kph range. Let's face it, in terms of wind resistance, it's not much better than pushing a brick through the air. Having said that, my range on a tank seems to be about 450km of mixed driving (haven't measured it lately though) and I have 17K on mine.

I would bring to the attention of your service manager given that you're not idling a lot and we will assume you're not lighting all the boilers when leaving a traffic light or stop sign. ;)

The problem is that there are so many factors that can affect fuel economy on a 1.8L engine. (ie; weight, wind, amount of throttle, etc.)

Driving at 100 km/h, I get about 730 km per tank.

You get the best mileage when the vehicle is just into the highest gear, and stays there.

If you want to get good fuel mileage while driving fast, drive down from Pike's Peak. Or buy a motorcycle.
